The High Court of Madhya Pradesh sits at three places: the Principal Seat at Jabalpur and the permanent Benches at Indore and Gwalior. Filing at the wrong place means the Registry returns the case under Chapter III of the High Court Rules, and time is lost. This tool works out MP High Court bench jurisdiction for every one of the 55 revenue districts of the State.
How bench jurisdiction is decided
How MP High Court bench jurisdiction is decided
The Presidential Orders of 28 November 1968 divide the districts between the two Benches:
- Indore Bench: Indore, Ujjain, Dewas, Dhar, Jhabua, Ratlam, Mandsaur, Khargone, Shajapur and Rajgarh
- Gwalior Bench: Gwalior, Shivpuri, Datia, Guna, Vidisha, Bhind and Morena
- Principal Seat at Jabalpur: every other district
Districts carved out of these later, such as Neemuch, Barwani, Alirajpur, Agar Malwa, Ashoknagar and Sheopur, follow their parent district.
Some cases go to Jabalpur whatever the district:
- cases of Judicial Officers and High Court or District Court staff (Preface VI);
- vires challenges arising from the Bench districts (Preface V);
- a writ petition filed at Jabalpur with the Chief Justice’s leave (Chapter III Rule 2).
Pick your district and the type of case. The tool shows the correct seat, whether a Single Bench or a Division Bench will hear it, how the case is registered, and how many paper-book sets to file. It also gives a draft heading and jurisdiction paragraph you can adapt for your petition.
